This time of year is known for calm weather windows, clean water, and hungry fish—and that’s exactly what we’re seeing right now.

Mangrove Snapper

Mangrove snapper have been the most consistent catch throughout the week. Nearly every piece of hard bottom in the 3–9 mile range has been holding fish, and the average size has been impressive.

We’re typically seeing:

  • Schools stacked up mid-water and tight to structure
  • Plenty of keeper-sized fish, with many in the 13–15” class
  • A steady bite throughout the day, not just early or late

Light leaders (20–25 lb fluorocarbon), small hooks, and natural baits like shrimp or small cut pieces continue to work best. These fish are fired up and feeding aggressively.

Lane Snapper

Lane snapper have been mixed right in with the mangroves and are eating just about anything they see. They’ve been especially productive for families and newer anglers because they hit quickly and fight hard on light tackle.

Shrimp, squid, and small pieces of cut bait have all produced excellent results. Most trips have ended with a mixed cooler of mangroves and lanes—exactly what nearshore fishing is all about this time of year.

Hogfish

We’ve also landed a few hogfish on recent trips. While hogfish aren’t typically the main target during this early stretch, they’re always a highlight when they come up. Light rigs with shrimp have been the key for these fish. Their presence is a great sign as we move closer to prime winter hogfish season.

Conditions & What to Expect

Stable temperatures, clear water, and light currents have combined to make the nearshore reefs extremely productive. Bait has been easy to find, and the fish have been holding tight to the structure.

If you’re looking for:

  • Consistent rod-bending action
  • A cooler full of top-tier table fare
  • Family-friendly nearshore fishing

…this is one of the best windows of the season to get out on the water.
