The shallow reefs off Anna Maria Island and the central Gulf have been on fire this week. Clean water, steady tides, and schools of baitfish have sparked incredible action on the nearshore reefs — especially for mangrove snapper, red grouper, and hogfish.
We’ve been fishing patch reefs and rocky bottom in the 20- to 40-foot range, and just about every trip has produced steady rod-bending action. If you’ve been waiting for that perfect mix of calm seas and hungry fish, now’s the time to go.
What’s Biting
- Mangrove Snapper – These reef favorites are stacked up tight to structure. Live pilchards, pinfish, or fresh-cut bait have been producing nonstop bites.
- Red Grouper – Solid fish are holding on hard bottom and ledge edges. Drifting or anchoring over rocky patches has been the key.
- Hogfish – Always a prized catch, hogfish are showing up in good numbers right now. Light tackle and shrimp baits near the bottom have been working best.
Best Techniques Right Now
- Keep your baits close to the structure but just off the bottom.
- Use light leaders and smaller hooks for hogfish — they’re finicky eaters.
- Mornings with good water movement have produced the strongest bites.
- Bring a variety of weights to adjust for current — presentation is everything.
Why the Fishing Is So Good
Late fall brings some of the most consistent reef fishing of the year. As the Gulf begins to cool, snapper and grouper feed aggressively, and hogfish move shallow chasing crabs and shrimp. The calm weather windows we’ve been getting are making for smooth rides and full fish boxes.
