Fishing is a great addition to your winter getaway at Anna Maria Island. You came here for a break from the cold, but by Florida standards we are cold. Ha. But I mention this because our coastal species change up for the cooler weather season. This article will help you identify what you can and might catch during the winter at AMI.

Winter Fishing Charter Info For AMI

Winter is a great time to visit Anna Maria Island and go fishing. The temperatures are moderate, with the average winter temps for the area being between 55 (low) and 75 (high). There is also less boat traffic and fishing pressure, making the days more relaxing and productive all at the same time.

Most Common Species

The area’s resident inshore species will be alive and well during the winter months. A few things change, one is behavior but, with a local guide, this is a non-issue. These species simply move to more temperate water sources (warm water outflows or spring-fed coastal rivers).

Another change is in size. Many anglers will argue that winter fishing is simply better quality fish across the board – and this is true. But one of the standouts will be redfish. It is during late fall and early winter that the big breeding females come into the area and feed.

Seatrout will be another commonly caught species, but fish like snook and tarpon will get finicky as the temps drop.

As winter progresses, shots at healthy-sized sheepshead and black drum will get added to the list. But redfish will shrink back down to the juvenile resident-sized version that is most commonly caught here year-round.

Species That May Be Available

Alongside shots at sheepshead and black drum, you may find yourself landing flounder and even pompano during the late winter months.

Other possibilities include silver seatrout.
